Liturgy Lab – 2013 Ministry Fairs

Website Lit Lab image

In the Christian tradition, worship trains our eyes and our focus on God — putting the object of our worship toward its rightful place.  In Anglican rites, we formalize this practice through our liturgies in The Book of Common Prayer.  It is the central focus of “what we do” as a people called to worship God.  How do we go beyond Rites I & II liturgies to create something new, fresh, and a reflection of our diversity and humanity, created by God?

This Ministry Fair, called a “Liturgy Lab,” will challenge participants, lay and ordained, to draw upon our own experiences of worship and our own rich tradition, to create fresh expressions of common elements of corporate worship.

At the liturgy+lab we will watch videos of new expressions of liturgy to stir our thoughts and imaginations. We will have a large group common teaching, sketching a framework for liturgy—purpose, outline of familiar liturgy, components of liturgy.  We will then break into small groups, each focused on one component of liturgy.  The facilitated groups will each create a liturgical rite, using silence, chant, song, dance, space, movement, etc., and variety of resources.

The Worship     At Noon, we will bring together each of the new expressions of liturgical components from the liturgy+lab into one Eucharistic service and use it for our worship time.

The Conversation     Over lunch, we will debrief and discuss what we experienced in the liturgy+lab and how it affected us.

The Hope    Lay and ordained will be invited and empowered to roll up our sleeves and collaborate together, creating these new forms of worship, collectively, “on the spot,” and to try something new.
