The journey we are on as the Episcopal Church in Vermont is a journey toward full and faithful participation in the reconciling Mission of God in the world of the 21st century. We are mindful that this journey challenges us with new realities about what it means to be and to become the Church, the faithful community of the Body of Christ, called out by God to give voice and substance to the Good News of God in Christ in our day and time.
As with many journeys we read about in the Bible, this journey is taking us to a destination where much is uncertain. What is certain is the promise of Emmanuel – God is with us. God promises that we will have company on this journey and invites us to trust, even as we travel without a clear roadmap.
Current realities demand that we re-orient, re-imagine and re-tool for this journey, even as we draw strength from the richness of our liturgical, pastoral and theological heritage. Our 2014 Diocesan Convention, along with programs and events leading up to Convention, will carry this theme of equipping ourselves for creative engagement with the godly journey we are on, asking such questions as:
- How do we “re-orient” our awareness so that we tune into God’s dynamic action in the world that is outside our conventional perceptions of how we understand God?
- What needs to be “re-imagined” since traditional approaches to mission are no longer effective and the church is moving into new territory where things cannot remain the same as in the past?
- What skills of leadership are being summoned from us as we “re-tool” to participate in new ways of engaging in God’s Mission?
With an openness and responsiveness to the “Stirrings of the Spirit” in our midst, we seek to navigate this journey with trust, confidence and hope in God’s compassionate love and grace at work in and through our efforts.
