Migrant Justice Calls for June 17 March for Milk With Dignity
Saturday, June 17, marks the two-year anniversary of Ben & Jerry’s commitment to join the Migrant Justice Milk with Dignity Program. However, Migrant Justice reports that no action has actually taken place. Instead, in an email dated May 18, Migrant Justice stated that Ben & Jerry’s is “made with wage theft, inhumane housing, and dangerous working conditions.”
Migrant Justice is calling on allies to participate in a June 17 March for Milk With Dignity that will take them 13 miles from the Vermont State House to Ben & Jerry’s Public Relations Center in Waterbury, VT. Migrant Justice hopes to raise awareness of three benefits of the Milk With Dignity Program:
1. By joining the Milk with Dignity Program, Ben & Jerry’s will put in place health and safety protections in its dairy supply chain that could literally mean the difference between life and death.
2. By joining the Milk with Dignity Program, Ben & Jerry’s will establish much needed protections and enforcement mechanisms in their dairy supply chain against forced labor, wage theft and retaliation against workers who defend their rights.
3. By joining the Milk with Dignity Program, Ben & Jerry’s will put in place much needed protections—with enforcement—against workplace discrimination, overcrowded housing, and ensure that workers’ have access to things as fundamental as adequate heat and clean water.
