Kids of St. James Celebrate Four Years of Ecumenical Lunch Bunch Garden Success
By the Kids of St. James
Four years ago, through a generous donation by Grow Compost of Vermont and the Rev. Lisa Ransom, the Ecumenical Lunch Bunch (ELB) Garden was established at St. James with organic compost and two raised beds. Each summer, the Kids of St. James have planted, watered, weeded, and harvest cucumbers and cherry tomatoes for the ELB program.
Pictured here are two boys who are proud to tend the garden each summer and to share the produce with children in the Essex Junction community, who benefit from this summer feeding program. They have literally grown up doing this community service project—starting at ages three and five that first summer in 2013. The children have learned about sharing, local poverty, being responsible, what weeds look like, how plants grow, how fruit comes from the flowers, eating local, and more!
