A Letter from Bishop Ely – October 2, 2017

A Letter from Bishop Ely – October 2, 2017

Dear Clergy serving Congregations, Senior Wardens, Parish Administrators, and other leaders

In the wake of the recent shooting in Las Vegas, I wanted to let you know that Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and Anglican Primates have offered a video message here. Additionally, I have joined Bishops United Against Gun Violence in a statement, which was released this afternoon on the Bishop’s United Against Gun Violence website here and on our Diocesan website at this link:  Please be sure to share these statements with your congregations along with continued prayers for the victims and alleged perpetrator of the Las Vegas shooting.

I would also like to ask all churches with bell towers to toll their bells at noon Eastern Time (9:00 AM Pacific Time) tomorrow in solidarity with the Diocese and people of Nevada. Churches in the Diocese of Nevada will be tolling their bells, as well as the Washington Cathedral and churches in other dioceses. The number of times the bells are rung will be based on the number of dead as reported at that time, plus the perpetrator of the violence. Watch for updates on the Episcopalians Against Gun Violence Facebook page here.

I also offer this link to a litany you may wish to use. It comes to us from All Saints, Pasadena.

In closing, I echo the plea of my friend and colleague, the Rt. Rev. William H. Stokes, Bishop of New Jersey, who asks that we “Please pray for the victims of this shooting and for the family members and loved ones. Pray for those who responded and for medical personnel who through their own grief and being overwhelmed by sheer numbers, are working desperately to treat those wounded.

“May we all pray for healing and an end to the violence that so mars our nation.”

Faithfully yours in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace,
The Rt. Rev. Thomas C. Ely
