Diocesan Council Meeting Highlights, Dec. 6, 2017

By the Rev. Paul L. Gratz

The Diocesan Council met in a video conference on December 6, 2017. This was a scheduled meeting to introduce the new council members to the process, review some work, and prepare for the coming year. After our devotions and brief introduction, significant time was spent on an item not originally on the agenda, the Bishop’s announced intention to retire. Bishop Ely shared some of the background of his decision as well anticipating the roles of the Standing Committee and Council in the transition. Members of the council shared some of their immediate reaction to this “breaking” news as well.

Additionally, the Council spent some time reflecting on the 2017 Convention with positive reactions to our guest speaker and the other workshop leaders, and an appreciation for the Treasurer’s presentation of, and the open conversation around, the budget.

Council then went on to its usual agenda items, especially reviewing the current and anticipated situation with the 2017 budget’s revenues. Further actions by Council regarding the short-fall beyond the framework already announced to deal with its effects will await the specifics from the year-end reporting by parishes.

Appointments were made to the Grants and Loans Committee. Ben Anderson-Ray, Laurie Chiperfield, and John Hartman will serve three-year terms. One other nomination is being sought.

Our involvement with the Vermont Community Loan Fund was not only renewed but extended from a three year to five year commitment.

Updates to this year’s Council Priorities were given, with the understanding that at the retreat in January these will be more fully reviewed as we create our 2018 Priorities.
