January 2018 Update from the Standing Committee
Since hearing from Bishop Ely that he plans to retire as our Bishop no later than September 2019, the Standing Committee has been meeting regularly to begin guiding the process of bringing new leadership to the Episcopal Church in Vermont. In Advent, a message from The Rev. Richard Swanson, President of the Standing Committee was distributed in which he affirmed our commitment to prayerfully lead and walk with the Diocese through this time of transition.
The Standing Committee has been meeting regularly to begin guiding the process of bringing new leadership to the Diocese.
The Standing Committee has since hired a consultant recommended by the National Church. The Rev. Gary Butterworth, from the Diocese of Western North Carolina, will work to guide, advise, and assist in the discernment process for the episcopacy in the Diocese of Vermont.
In the near future, the Standing Committee will be appointing a Bishop Nominating and Discernment Committee. More information about this ministry will be available in the next few weeks. Please contact the Standing Committee by email at firstname.lastname@example.org to find out more information.
We seek your continual prayer and request the following prayer be used on Sundays during Prayers of the People, and prayed at your Annual Meeting:
Loving God, we pray for your Holy Spirit’s guidance as we seek new leadership for the Episcopal Church In Vermont. Give listening hearts and receptive minds to those appointed to search and those discerning a call to serve as Bishop. May we be united in our desire for your will for this Diocese that the love of Jesus may be evident to all. For it is in His name we pray. Amen

About the Standing Committee
Two important roles of the Standing Committee are (1) to be a council of advice to the Bishop, and (2) to assume responsibility for the process of election of a new Bishop, should there be a vacancy in the office of the Bishop.
