Christ Church Montpelier Honors Forbears, Supports Community, and Readies Church for Future Generations with ‘Hearts on Fire’ Campaign

For Immediate Release

Contact: Helen Bryan, Campaign Chair (802) 279-8858

MONTPELIER, Vermont – Christ Episcopal Church in Montpelier recently announced its capital campaign, Hearts on Fire: Forging the Future of Christ Episcopal Church, as part of its sesquicentennial celebration. “We’ve set a campaign goal of $700,000 to be raised by the end of the year. Thanks to a few very generous pledges, we are well on our way with over $350,000 already pledged,” according to Helen Bryan, chair of the Hearts on Fire campaign.

The Christ Church sanctuary was constructed 150 years ago and consecrated on June 2, 1868. This celebration of 150 years led the Church to consider how best to honor its founders and forbears, continue to provide for its community today, and ready the church for future generations of worshipers.

The Christ Church building is a fixture in downtown Montpelier, with its location on State Street not far from the Vermont State House. The building is a Gothic-style stone structure that has survived 150 years of flooding, Vermont winters and, in 2015, a crane falling into the building! The church inspires parishioners and visitors alike to imagine it still standing 150 years from now, continuing to provide a home for Sunday worship, caring ministries, and community gatherings. But to fulfill that vision the building needs work. The past several years have seen many repairs and updates completed as individual projects. Recently, the Church engaged Alpine Restoration, a firm with expertise in historic masonry and restoration, for a comprehensive assessment of needed immediate repairs and their associated costs. Alpine Restoration estimates at least $800,000 for repairs to the building. This work will be tackled in phases, but the plan is to start this fall as funds become available through the Hearts on Fire campaign. Repairs will be completed in phases over the next several years, allowing the Church to raise the final $100,000 over time.
