St. John’s Essex, NY to Host Services with Ashmont Boy Choir – August 4 & 5, 2018
ESSEX, NY – Visit St. John’s Episcopal Church, 4 Church St, Essex, NY, to experience one or two services featuring the Ashmont Boy Choir. Join us for Evensong on Saturday, August 4, at 4:00 PM. Then return on Sunday, August 5, at 9:15 AM for morning worship with Father Craig, Ashmont Boy Choir, and a community brunch following the service.
Since the late middle ages “evensong” has been the popular name for vespers (from the Latin vesperis, “evening”), the Evening Office of the western church. In many Anglican cathedrals (especially in England), evensong is sung by clergy and choir as a choral liturgy. All are welcome.
The Ashmont Boys Choir Camp provides a four-day summer camp experience for the Choir members from the Parish of All Saints in Dorchester, MA (a neighborhood of Boston). The Choir is noted for its racial & ethnic diversity, and is one of fewer than 20 such choirs left in the United States today. Each morning the boys work on music skills and rehearse service music at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Essex, NY. In the afternoon they partake in healthy activities (hiking, boating, swimming) in the Adirondacks. Parishioners host the singers in their homes and chaperone various activities. Each evening a different parishioner hosts a dinner, after which the Choir leads the singing of Compline. The choir camp ends with the Choir singing on Saturday at St John’s Evensong service and on Sunday at the Eucharist. For many of the Ashmont singers, the choir camp at St. John’s may be their only summer camp experience. Please show your support by attending the August 4 and 5 services.
