‘Racial Reconciliation: Engagement’ Your Invitation to an October 4 Clergy Day

‘Racial Reconciliation: Engagement’ Your Invitation to an October 4 Clergy Day

Dear Clergy Colleagues,

You are cordially invited to a Clergy Day on Thursday, October 4 between 9:30 am and 3:00 pm. The location is being determined and will be announced soon.

The theme for our October 4 Clergy Day is “Racial Reconciliation: Engagement” and will be a continuation of the Four-phase Racial Healing Process that we began together last year. Participation in the October 2017 event is NOT a prerequisite for the upcoming event. This year’s Clergy Day provides us with an opportunity to consider what actions we might undertake after acknowledging our blind spots concerning race and racism.

To fully engage in Clergy Day discussions, I ask that you complete the pre-work outlined in the attached document. As part of this request, you will need to acquire White Like Me by Tim Wise, which is available in hardcopy, e-book, and audio formats. I will provide a reimbursement of up to $20 at Clergy Day to cover the cost of the book, in whichever format you choose, so please save your receipt.

RSVP your intention to participate in the October 4 Clergy Day to my assistant, Pamela Van de Graaf, at or 802-863-3431 no later than September 10.  This will help ensure a lunch for everyone.

I know that this day follows on the heel of the Special Convention; but I believe it is imperative that we keep moving forward on this important dimension of our common life. I strongly encourage you to place this date on your calendar now and plan to participate.

You can expect to receive a detailed agenda as the date approaches. In the meantime, please begin the pre-work without delay. Feel free to contact Racial Reconciliation Team co-facilitators the Rev. Rob Spainhour ( or Maurice Harris ( with any additional questions.

We hope you will join us.
