The Rt. Rev. Thomas C. Ely is pleased to announce an opportunity for up to 10 participants from the Episcopal Church in Vermont to learn about the human rights work and model that has made Cristosal one of the leading human rights organizations in Central America. This opportunity, the Global School Introductory Seminar, is designed to equip participants with firsthand, experiential knowledge alongside Salvadorians, Cristosal staffers, and other North American participants.
Participants must be able to travel to El Salvador from February 17-23, 2019. The registration cost is $995 and includes meals, lodging and local transportation. Flights to and from El Salvador are the responsibility of each participant. A $1,000 budget is recommended for airfare. Grant funds may be available to assist with costs, although participants will be asked to contribute according to their ability.
Global School participants will…
- Engage directly with Cristosal’s work in Central America.
- Deepen their understanding of how structures rooted in discrimination perpetuate injustice and violence.
- Study various examples of application of human rights principles in action.
- Develop tools to advocate for human rights locally and globally.
- Apply a human rights approach to responding to a variety of social justice issues.
Bishop Ely, who is also is also planning to participate in the seminar, said, “Cristosal’s work and human rights model are applicable in responding to a variety of social justice issues, both locally and globally. The Global School is a great way to develop as disciples of Jesus Christ, participate in God’s reconciling mission in the world, and witness the important role of our diocese abroad.”
Cristosal is a Mission Partner of The Episcopal Church, and as an extension of his office as Bishop of Vermont, Ely serves on the Cristosal Board of Directors.
Because there is a limit of 10 spaces for this trip, those interested in participating are asked to contact Bishop Ely (firstname.lastname@example.org) as soon as possible.
