Update from the Transition Committee (October 2, 2018)

On September 22, at Christ Church in Montpelier, the Transition Committee held an organizational meeting to discuss the work that lies ahead of them and the diocese as they prepare for the election and consecration of our new bishop, as well as celebrating Bishop Ely’s ministry. The public phase of the Transition Committee’s work will begin when, after the discernment work of the BDNC, the Standing Committee announces the slate of candidates who will stand for election. Until then, the committee will be working behind the scenes to prepare for the tasks and events described below.

The meeting started off with a round of sharing so that the committee members could both know and understand one another better. The members shared their gifts and their strengths, their weaknesses and their concerns, and offered both laughter and support for one another and the work that they have been called to do.

The prime order of business was the forming and oganizing of multiple sub-committees that will focus on specific
aspects of the work ahead. The committee picked team leaders and formed a plan of action, with committee members voicing where they felt most strongly called, and sharing where their gifts would be best suited. These sub-committees are:

  • Education and Communication
  • Walkabouts
  • Electing Convention
  • Farewell and Gifts
  • Bishop Resettlement
  • Consecration

In the coming months, the Transition Committee will invite members of the church to volunteer to help with these committees and will report regularly on the progress of their work.

Further business included discussion of finances, how the committee will conduct business, times and location of meetings, and the tools that will be used throughout the process.

The meeting ended with the Rev. Rick Swanson, President of the Standing Committee, commissioning Transition Committee for this important work. He prayed over the members of the committee after they proclaimed their desire and willingness to be set aside for the tasks ahead.

More updates will be made available as they occur. You can contact the Transition Committee at
