December marks the 20th anniversary of the Baker Decision. The Rev. Deacon Stannard Baker from the Cathedral Church of St. Paul will be part of a panel at Norwich University this Thursday, November 14, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Tom Little, chancellor for the Episcopal Church in Vermont, will also be part of the panel. Event Description:
Panel discussion – Baker v. State of Vermont – the 20th anniversary of the historic 1999 Vermont Supreme Court decision that led to the legalization of same-sex marriage, first in Vermont and then throughout much of the United States.
Panelists:
Stannard Baker – one of the six original plaintiffs (three same-sex couples) who challenged the constitutionality of the law that limited marriage to a man and a woman
Hon. Denise R. Johnson – retired Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court who was a member of the Court that heard and decided the case
Thomas A. Little – former state legislator, one of the legislative leaders who was instrumental in the Vermont General Assembly’s creation of the Civil Union law – the first such law ever passed in the United States
Hon. Beth Robinson – currently a Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court and one of the attorneys who represented the plaintiffs before the Supreme Court in 1999
