We Long for Light: Bishop Shannon’s Christmas Message

December 21, 2023

Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word not one thing came into being that came into being. What has come into being in the Word was life, and that life was the light of all people. The light shines in the bleakness, and the bleakness did not overtake it.

—John 1:3-5
(Dr. Wilda C. Gafney, A Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church, Church Publishing Incorporated)

In the bleak midwinter, we long for light—the light of the sun to brighten our days, the light of the moon to guide us at night, the light of Christ to shine in our hearts. And on this holiest of nights, our prayers are answered. The moon shines bright and the True Light comes into the world for the salvation of all creation.

How might we testify to the light of Christ in our lives?

Friends, this Christmas I pray that the bleakness, fear, and loss of our hurting world be overtaken by the light that comes into the world this night. May God’s blessing be with each of you and those you love this Christmas season.

Peace and blessings,

Bishop Shannon
