A Letter from the Rt. Rev. Thomas C. Ely Announcing a Special Convention for the Election of the 11th Bishop Diocesan of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont – Saturday, May 18, 2019

To the Beloved Community of the Episcopal Church in Vermont:
“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 1:7)
In accordance with Title I, Canon I, Section 2 of the Canons of the Diocese of Vermont, I hereby give notice of my call to gather in Special Convention for the sole purpose of electing the 11th Bishop Diocesan of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont, on Saturday, May 18, 2019, beginning at 10:00 AM, at the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul, Burlington, Vermont.
As a reminder, those clergy eligible to vote at this Special Electing Convention will be “all Clergy canonically resident in the Diocese and who have attended at least two out of five immediately preceding conventions, if such conventions have occurred during their tenure of canonical residence. The requirement of attendance at previous conventions shall not apply to Clergy who are serving in the armed forces of the United States or to Clergy who are absent from the United States due to service as missionaries in foreign countries. Clergy who are newly canonically resident in the Diocese are eligible to vote.” (Title I, Canon 1, Sec. 3)
In addition, “Every Parish regularly organized as required by the Constitution and every Mission permanently organized by these Canons shall be entitled to and shall send three (3) Lay Delegates to the Diocesan Convention” (Title I, Canon I, Sec. 4); “but no Parish or Mission shall be entitled to send Delegates to a Special Convention when a Bishop is to be elected which has failed to be represented by Delegates is as many as two of the five Annual Conventions immediately preceding. (Title I, Canon I, Sec.9) Lay Delegates eligible to vote shall be those elected at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the congregation in accordance with Title III, Canon 13, Section 4 of the Diocesan Canons.
Further details, including Rules of Order for this Special Convention, along with the names of those being nominated, will be provided in advance. Opportunities to learn about and meet the nominees prior to the Special Convention will be arranged through the Transition Committee, chaired by the Reverend Todd McKee.
