From Bishop Shannon: Allow Your Emotions to Help You Pray

November 5, 2024

Beloveds,

As we settle in waiting for election results, we yearn for peace and unity. As we wait, our hearts are full of many emotions; hope, fear, anticipation, exhaustion, relief, anxiety and more. I encourage you to acknowledge what you are feeling. All of our emotions are a gift from God. We are meant to feel them. Examine what they are telling you about your life and the world. Don’t wallow in them, but allow them to help you know how to pray, and what actions you might take.

I know that many of us are particularly concerned tonight about what might happen if election results are delayed, about the possibility of violence, and about the likelihood of continued division. The fear we are feeling is just that, a single, although strong, emotion. It is not the sum of who we are as God’s people. We are people of faith.

2 Timothy 1:7 keeps coming to mind for me a lot these days. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

We must focus our attention on whatever promotes peace, starting with prayers for peace and the healing of our communities and this nation. We have the faith which binds us together and will help us navigate this season faithfully together. I’m praying for you and our nation. May we know God’s peace and justice.

Peace and Blessings,
