Psalm 56:8
You’ve kept track of my every toss and turn
through the sleepless nights,
Each tear entered in your ledger,
each ache written in your book.
Beloveds,
I don’t have words to express what I’m feeling about the election results. I knew that whoever won the election, our nation and church would have difficult work ahead.
I’m grieving not because a political party lost, but because most of the people in our country chose a leader whose policies do not support our commitment to seek and serve Christ in all persons; love our neighbor as ourselves; strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being. Anything that makes it harder for us to do the work of our baptism is a cause for mourning.
Last night I encouraged you to embrace the feelings that come to you in this time. Tonight I urge you not to worry about trying to find hope right now. It will take care of itself, and in time, it will find you, find us. Now it is time to grieve; to cry; to feel angry; to feel indignant; to feel afraid; to feel anxious because of uncertainty; to question God; to lament.
In time, together, we will continue the work we’ve committed to in our baptism. But let us rest first. In the coming days, weeks and months we will have the strength and clarity to take up the work ahead, to be and build beloved community. We will, with God’s help.
Peace and Blessings,
