Dear People of God in the Diocese of Vermont,
I am delighted to announce that the Rev. Susan McMillan has accepted my call to serve as Archdeacon of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont.
Since her ordination in 2023, Susan has walked alongside our diocesan leaders and Vermont Interfaith Action, as our diocesan Deacon to VIA. Most recently, she traveled to Minneapolis with VIA in support of the Day of Fasting and Prayer for Truth and Freedom on January 23. Prior to her ordination, she had a long career in veterinary medicine.
As our Archdeacon, she will work to assist in the formation, deployment, supervision, and support of our Deacons and those preparing to become Deacons. I believe that Susan’s commitment to serving others both through ordained ministry and her social justice work make her a natural fit for this role.
When asked about her new call, Susan wrote, “I am honored that Bishop Shannon has asked me to serve as an Archdeacon for the Episcopal Church in Vermont. I am excited to walk alongside all the members of our diocesan family and particularly my peers who make up the disturbance of deacons, as each of us is called to be a prophetic voice for Christ in our world.
“I will carry my great love and deep respect for my friends the Ven. Catherine Cooke and the late Ven. Stannard Baker whose exceptional examples of servant leadership have set a high standard for us all.”
I hope that you will join me in celebrating and praying for Susan as she approaches this new challenge.
Peace and Blessings,
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Shannon MacVean-Brown
11th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont
