Standing Committee

The Standing Committee is comprised of four clergy and four lay people, with one person of each order elected at each annual diocesan convention to serve a term of four years.

Most of the duties of a Standing Committee are outlined by the churchwide canons. These duties include consenting to the elections of bishops, approving actions regarding diocesan properties, and approving the ordination of priests in deacons. The Standing Committee additionally acts as the bishop’s council of advice, providing insight on diocesan operation and programming.

When there is no bishop, the Standing Committee becomes the ecclesiastical authority of the diocese, taking on many of the duties that would normally be fulfilled by a bishop.

While experience and knowledge of the operation of the Episcopal Church is appreciated, no experience is necessary. Diverse experiences and knowledge are assets to the Committee and Diocese as a whole.
